In Weixian, a new theater is quietly changing daily life. Over the past three years, the local Weizhou Grand Theater has staged 300 shows, bringing national-level productions and traditional opera to audience. With tickets priced as low as ¥20, Local citizens are filling the seats. Local intangible heritage troupes share the stage with top companies, while performances are driving nearby dining, tourism and nightlife. For many residents, culture becomes part of an ordinary evening out. By making culture accessible, the theater gives people the freedom to choose and that’s the core of public cultural service.
