Researchers at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, have identified the physical mechanism behind the unusually high cohesiveness of lunar soil collected by the Chang’e-6 mission on the Moon’s far side. High-resolution CT scans revealed extremely fine, rough, and irregular particles with a D60 of just 48.4 micrometers. Enhanced friction, van der Waals forces, and electrostatic forces jointly increase cohesion, offering new insights for future lunar exploration and base construction.
